چکیده

Low-loss hollow flexible metal/dielectric coated polycarbonate waveguides have been designed and fabricated for the maximal transmission of Terahertz radiation (THz). Attenuation characteristics of Terahertz radiation in Ag/Au coated waveguides with bore diameters 4.1 mm, 3.2 mm, 2 mm were studied at 215 μm wavelength and the maximal transmission was obtained by coupling the lowest loss TE11 mode from an optically pumped terahertz laser. Transmission loss can be reduced substantially by adding a dielectric layer to the metal coated waveguide and by coupling HE11 mode into it. Polystyrene (PS) was chosen to be the dielectric, due to its low extinction coefficient, which enhances the transmission through the waveguide. A propagation loss of less than 1 dB/m was achieved with these metal/dielectric coated waveguides.

Characterization of bending loss in hollow flexible terahertz waveguides.

Attenuation characteristics of hollow, flexible, metal and metal/dielectric coated polycarbonate waveguides were investigated using an optically pumped far infrared (FIR) laser at 215 µm. The bending loss of silver coated polycarbonate waveguides were measured as a function of various bending angles, bending radii, and bore diameters. Minimal propagation losses of 1.77, 0.96 dB/m were achieved ...

Dual-frequency Characterization of Bending Loss in Hollow Flexible Terahertz Waveguides

Low-loss, hollow, flexible, metal-coated waveguides were designed and fabricated for the maximal transmission of terahertz radiation. Since recent terahertz skin, colon, and breast cancer studies showed a contrast between normal and diseased tissues between 500 to 600GHz frequencies, flexible metal-coated waveguides with various bore diameters were studied at both 584GHz and 1.4THz frequencies ...

Characterization of Hollow Polycarbonate Metal waveguides using Terahertz time domain spectroscopy

In recent times, terahertz (THz) or the far-infrared region of the electromagnetic spectrum has gained critical significance due to many potential applications including medical diagnostics, nondestructive evaluation of material parameters, chemical sensing, remote sensing and security screening. However with the development of various applications, the need of guided systems for the transmissi...

Metal-coated hollow nanowires for low-loss transportation of plasmonic modes with nanoscale mode confinement

Two types of plasmonic waveguiding structures based on hollow dielectric nanowires are proposed and their modal properties are investigated numerically at a wavelength of 1550 nm. The first type of waveguide consists of a high-index hollow nanowire covered directly by a thin metallic film. Depending on the size of the hollow nanowire, such a waveguide could support a plasmonic mode with lower p...

Terahertz wave transmission in flexible polystyrene-lined hollow metallic waveguides for the 2.5-5 THz band.

A low-loss and low-dispersive optical-fiber-like hybrid HE₁₁ mode is developed within a wide band in metallic hollow waveguides if their inner walls are coated with a thin dielectric layer. We investigate terahertz (THz) transmission losses from 0.5 to 5.5 THz and bending losses at 2.85 THz in a polystyrene-lined silver waveguides with core diameters small enough (1 mm) to minimize the number o...
